BigEvents

The Big Events Policy Hub at the Center for International and Strategic Studies (CISS), Luiss Guido Carli, is dedicated to the strategic study and policy analysis of major global events and their multifaceted impacts on international relations, governance, and security. Recognizing that large-scale events—such as international summits, global sporting competitions, world expositions, and high-profile diplomatic gatherings—serve as critical junctures in the global order, the Hub examines how these occasions shape political agendas, economic trajectories, and societal perceptions.
The Hub’s mission is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the planning, execution, and legacy of big events, focusing on their capacity to influence international cooperation, soft power projection, and global policy innovation. It explores the interplay between event diplomacy and national interests, analyzing the ways in which host countries leverage such platforms to advance strategic objectives, foster international partnerships, and address pressing global challenges.
Composed of a diverse team of senior and junior researchers with backgrounds in international relations, public policy, law, and event management, the Big Events Policy Hub conducts research on the governance frameworks that underpin major events, the security and logistical complexities they entail, and the opportunities they present for policy experimentation and multilateral engagement. The Hub investigates the economic, social, and reputational impacts of hosting global events, considering both the immediate effects and the long-term legacies for host cities and nations.
A central element of the Hub’s work is its engagement with stakeholders from government, international organizations, civil society, and the private sector. Through scenario analysis, policy dialogues, and collaborative research initiatives, the Hub seeks to inform decision-making processes and contribute to the design of resilient strategies for managing the opportunities and risks associated with big events.
The Big Events Policy Hub regularly organizes conferences, workshops, and high-level seminars that coincide with or analyze major international events, providing a platform for knowledge exchange and fostering a community of practice among experts and practitioners. By integrating empirical research with policy-oriented analysis, the Hub aims to enhance the capacity of public and private actors to maximize the benefits and mitigate the challenges of hosting and participating in global events. In doing so, it supports the broader mission of CISS to advance strategic studies and promote innovative approaches to international policy and governance.
